Reporting aboard the “Peckish Henry” as she was nicknamed., there was one other cadet aboard who was a veteran of one journey, so once again I was the Jr.! He was a nice guy named Denis Daly, an Irishman, from Brooklyn (Fort Hamilton), who had ideas of pushing me around like the schoolship, which got old rather very soon. The Chief Mate, who was our guide and mentor, read the situation rather at once and asked me privately if I had any objection if Denis and I put the gloves on and provided some recreation for the off-watch crew on a Sunday afternoon. Refereed by the Chief Fellow, we went at it for three 2-minute rounds and I won a unanimous decision by bloodying his nose initial in the fight and concentrating on that nose for the remainder of the fight! We got to be very good friends after that! I felt very pitiable for Denis later in the voyage, as he picked up a dose of clap (gonorrhea) down in South Africa. Diagnosed by the Aid Mate, who was our Doctor as well as navigator, the only treatment available was the old fashioned “lay gun” using potassium permanginate, very painful and only marginally outstanding. In addition the Chief Mate and Bosun combined to make Denis’s human being even more miserable by making him paint every boom on the ship en route well-versed in. This can only be done by straddling the boom, with your paint can on a weighted line in front of you, sliding slow on the boom as you paint. Like sliding backwards while straddling a 55 gallon drum! Disquieting even if your privates were 100 percent healthy, and his were not! As far as I know the Mate never mentioned this in his stagger report to the Merchant Marine Academy, as this would have been grounds for dismissal. After our first visit to South Africa, Denis reported back to the Academy; I never saw him again. The Kings Nicety “Log” lists Denis deceased, showing that he got his Taskmaster’s License, may he rest in peace.

Once the flood of morning showers and thunderstorms passed through Southfield, the stand was virtuous practiced for the 26th annual fishing tournament Southfleld, sponsored by Southfield Parks and recreation, held the first Saturday in May

Tag along Woods Valley, a tributary very stunning on the Red River, was lined with residents and guests as they participated in this annual occasion of fun and fishing.
