As the impulse for a national disability insurance scheme slowly builds, one junior woman not content to wait is embarking on a bold venture to give Australians with disabilities a well-advised chance at employment.
Federal and state governments are planning to offer the scheme, which they hope will revolutionise the lives of many people with disabilities and their carers and lay down better access to therapy, equipment and opportunities.
It is estimated that could in due course allow several hundred thousand Australians with disabilities enter the workforce, but 25-year-old defect advocate Laura O'Reilly has taken matters into her own hands.
Inspired by the face of her brother Shane, who had cerebral palsy, she has set up a company called Fighting Time on Sydney's northern beaches to employ people with disabilities.
"Shane was assessed as unemployable - so he was very terribly physically disabled, despite being very smart and very bright and switched on, and he loved computers," she said.
