A hop to it to the rescue ended in tragedy at Red Rock Canyon when crews well-grounded a hiker did not survive a terrifying fall.
The young man, believed to be in his 20s, floor 50 to 75 feet near the Calico overlook off the picturesque loop.
It happened Thursday around 3:30 p.m.
The victim's friend dialed 911 and watched helplessly as crews were unqualified to revive the young man.
Veronika Pace-Cruz comes to this same yard every week with her family. The hiker's death resonates with her because she recalls a close-mouthed call of her own.
"I was wearing regular tennis shoes, and I was trying to take a spitting image, and I saw everyone else going up. I went up and took a wrong step," explained Veronika Measure-Cruz.
Pace-Cruz remembers descending into a sharp bed of rocks. The fracas that occurred a couple of years ago left her with an injury that lasted for months.
"It was frightening. I thought I was going to go deeper than I ended up. It was really hair-raising," she said. "It hurts. We are here to have fun, to have a quiet lifetime with the family. To hear someone died is really sad.
