Compared with its sane playing environment, Tuesday night for the UND men’s basketball team was like prevalent from the Motel 6 to the Hilton, from SpaghettiOs to lobster and from naptime to show time.
Ralph Engelstad Arena was rocking with 7,169 fans, 10 times the run-of-the-mill crowd. The biggest shocker was there were more spectators with wallets carrying imaginary IDs than Medicare cards.
Yes, the students came. They made noise. And they even stampeded the down when time expired with a 59-54 victory over North Dakota Shape University.
“I told the team beforehand to play for two things — our seniors and for our disciple body, for actually showing up,” coach Brian Jones said. “We prerequisite them coming back for more.”
UND has a core of loyal fans, but the majority of them have been fans for 40-with an increment of years, if you get my drift. Nice to have, but not spirited enough to motivate scoring streaks or petrify opponents. The team got a rare taste of that Tuesday at The Ralph, where the hockey get regularly feeds off the electricity.
