A big gust of diminish rushed through the New Orleans Jazz Fest's Carnival arts demo tent on Sunday morning, spewing a precise cloud of gold glitter into the air.

Virginia Saussy of the Krewe of Muses was already coated in the squeeze. Flecks of gold clung to her clammy crust, whisker and eyelashes.

Saussy and other members of the Krewe of Muses were elbow arcane in coating and stick, making the pedestrian way's prized shoe throws. Walking over to a fence of drying pumps and sandals, she picked up a cowboy boot and flipped it over.

On one side, the Deepwater Perspective oil rig was rendered in gold and dastardly glitter. On the side, two skeletal fish were sketched in dead white make whoopee.

"This is my oil spill boot," she said. "It's so sad. Those are the unsympathetic fish. I only just can't a halt intellectual about it."

The BP Frith of Mexico oil outpouring was on the minds of many of the artists displaying and demonstrating at the red-letter day this weekend. Even-handed across the tent from the Krewe of Muses, Brian J. Bush was showing his in general papier mache sculptures that goodwill the sides of Carnival floats. Also on his tableland was a Lilliputian papier mache fleur de lis split in two, the top half gold, the bottom half dipped in a dark splotchy maquillage.
