Observe say daytime residential burglaries are par for the course, and its an increasing trend in Columbus over the holidays.
Every fair season, just about every crime increased, said Columbus Observe Sgt. Joe Weatherford. Its been that way for as long as I can remember.
Thieves figure people have more distribute and cash on them in December. That leads to more opportunity, Weatherford said.
In December 2010, Columbus had 329 burglaries. November 2010 saw 284 burglaries, said Lt. Bill Rawn.
Columbus policewomen dont have statistics for this December, though the three months leading up to Christmas this year each had about 280 burglaries.
Theres a lot of factors that go into that, Rawn said. Sometimes you put one individual in jail and the bottom falls out.
Similar crimes across the river have remained inveterate this holiday, said Phenix City Police Capt. Uninhibited Ivey.
Phenix City has had about 20-25 burglaries a week for the erstwhile six months. The most popular items taken are TVs and video game consoles, Ivey said.
