But today's briefcase has evolved into a traveling colleague for the busy professional zipping in and out of airports, or heading on the road.
"It hand-me-down to be an attache - those were the box-style briefcase that everybody had," said Shane Lewis, of the Elephant Casket stores in Tulsa. "What has happened is that they evolved into more of a soft briefcase."
Traveling professionals with vest-pocket laptop computers eschewed the heavy, old-fashioned cases for a zipped nylon bag with lots of compartments.
"Nowadays they are for the seasoned traveler, the seasoned business man," he said.
But the briefcases carried even a few years ago are changing. He said they stretch in price from $99 all the way to $1,500.
"Five years ago, everyone was carrying the 17-inch offensive computer, and it's all changed now because of smaller items," such as tablet computers and even smartphones.
